Rent-a-Daughter: The Daughter You Can Count On
Rent-a-Daughter is our most personal service. Think of us as the daughter you can count on: we look after your loved one as if they were our own, checking in, going to appointments, celebrating birthdays and holidays, and showing up at the ER at night. It is for families who cannot be there as often as they want to be, and for older adults who do not have family nearby at all.
What a daughter does
When people picture having a daughter nearby, they rarely think about care plans or medication lists. They think about someone who stops by with soup. Who notices that Dad has lost weight. Who sits in the waiting room during the colonoscopy and drives him home. Who remembers that Mom loves lilacs and brings some on Mother's Day. Who answers the phone at 11 p.m. and says, "I'm on my way."
That is what Rent-a-Daughter is about. Many older adults do not have children, or their children live far away, are ill themselves or are stretched to the limit. Rent-a-Daughter fills that gap with someone steady, warm and experienced who becomes a real presence in your loved one's life.
Who it is for
- Parents whose children live in another state or country.
- Older adults who never had children, or who have outlived family.
- Adult children who are nearby but caring for kids, a demanding job or their own health.
- Adults with mental illness or disabilities whose parents are aging and worried about the future.
- Anyone who would simply feel better knowing someone dependable is close by.
What we do
- Check in regularly. Visits and phone calls on a rhythm that feels natural, the way a daughter would drop by for coffee.
- Go to appointments. We drive or meet your loved one there, sit in with the doctor, and make sure questions get asked and answered.
- Celebrate the days that matter. Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays. A cake, a card, a phone call to the grandchildren, help getting to a family gathering. Milestones should not pass unnoticed because family is far away.
- Be there in an emergency. If your loved one is taken to the ER in the middle of the night, we can go, stay with them, talk with the doctors and keep you updated.
- Handle the little things. A new hearing aid battery, a winter coat that fits, a call to the building super about the leaky faucet, a prescription that needs picking up.
- Notice. The quieter mood, the unpaid bill, the aide who is not as attentive as she should be. Daughters notice, and so do we.
- Keep you close. We send updates, photos when your loved one is comfortable with it, and honest news, so you feel connected even from far away.
Family warmth, professional judgment
What makes Rent-a-Daughter different from a companion service is who shows up. Lisa and Kim are licensed clinical social workers and certified aging life care managers, each with more than 30 years of experience. So while we are bringing birthday flowers, we are also noticing early signs of confusion, depression or a medication problem, and we know what to do about them. If something needs attention, we can arrange it, whether that is medical advocacy, help at home or a fuller care plan.
It is the best of both: the personal attention of family and the experience of a professional who has seen nearly every situation aging can bring.
How it works with us
It starts with a free conversation. We want to hear about your loved one: their history, their personality, what makes them laugh and what worries you most. Then we meet them, usually as part of a care assessment, so we understand their health and home as well as their story.
Together we shape the role. Some families want weekly visits and help with every appointment. Others want a reliable person who checks in regularly and is on call when something happens. Over time, the relationship grows, and many of our clients come to look forward to our visits the way they would to a visit from family.
What families tell us they value
Families tell us they value knowing someone who truly cares is close by, especially on the days they cannot be. They appreciate that their parent's birthday was celebrated, that someone held his hand in the ER, that Mom had company at the doctor when the news was hard. Parents often tell us they feel less alone. And adult children say that the guilt of living far away eases when they know their loved one is being looked after with genuine affection.

Rent-a-Daughter: common questions
How is Rent-a-Daughter different from hiring a companion?+
A companion provides company and help with daily tasks, which can be wonderful. Rent-a-Daughter is a relationship with a licensed clinical social worker who is also watching over your loved one's health, safety and wellbeing. We go to appointments as an advocate, respond in emergencies, coordinate other services and catch problems early. Many of our clients also have a companion or aide, and we oversee that care too.
Can you really come to the ER at night?+
That kind of availability is a big part of what makes this service feel like family. We agree ahead of time on how emergencies will be handled, who calls us and how we will reach you. When your loved one is taken to the hospital, we can go to them, stay with them through the long hours, speak with the medical team and keep you updated.
Will my parent feel like they are being babysat?+
We work hard to make sure they do not. Rent-a-Daughter is built on respect. We treat your loved one as an adult with their own preferences, and we follow their lead about how involved we are. Most people come to enjoy the visits, the outings and the conversation. Many tell us it feels less like being looked after and more like having a friend who happens to know a lot about aging.
Can Rent-a-Daughter help an adult child with a disability or mental illness?+
Yes. Some of the families we serve are aging parents whose adult son or daughter lives with a developmental disability or mental illness. They want someone who will build a real relationship with their child now, and stay involved later. We check in, go to appointments, celebrate milestones and become a steady presence, drawing on our decades of mental health experience.
