Help Choosing Assisted Living, Memory Care and Other Senior Housing
We help families decide whether a move is the right choice and, if it is, find the setting that truly fits: assisted living, memory care, a nursing home, a continuing care retirement community or a group home. Because we never accept commissions or referral fees, our only interest is finding the best place for your loved one.
Is a move actually the right answer?
Before we talk about where, we talk about whether. Some families come to us sure that Mom needs assisted living, and after a careful assessment it turns out that more help at home, a few safety changes and a day program would let her stay where she wants to be. Other families are holding on to home long after it has become unsafe or isolating. We give you an honest opinion either way.
A move may make sense when:
- Your loved one is alone most of the day and increasingly isolated.
- Care needs now exceed what family and home care can safely provide.
- Nighttime needs, wandering or falls have become frequent.
- The home itself cannot be adapted, such as a house with bedrooms only upstairs.
- The cost of round-the-clock home care is no longer sustainable.
Our guide comparing assisted living and home care in New Jersey walks through the main trade-offs.
Why independent advice matters
Many free placement services are paid by the communities they recommend. That does not make them dishonest, but it does mean their list is shaped by who pays them. We never accept commissions or payment for referrals from any facility, agency or provider. When we suggest a community, it is because we have reason to believe it fits your loved one, and for no other reason.
What we do
- Clarify needs. Starting with a care assessment, we look at medical needs, memory, mood, mobility, personality and what matters most to your loved one.
- Explain the options. Assisted living, memory care, nursing homes, continuing care retirement communities, group homes and other specialized settings each serve different needs. We explain them in plain language.
- Look at finances. We help you understand what is private pay, what insurance may cover and whether Medicaid or veterans benefits could play a role later.
- Build a short list. Using our knowledge of communities across the region, we suggest a handful of good fits rather than an overwhelming list.
- Tour with you. We can visit communities with you or on your behalf, and we know which questions reveal how a place really runs: staffing, turnover, how they handle a fall at 2 a.m., what happens when care needs increase.
- Review contracts and assessments. We help you understand admission paperwork, levels of care and what could trigger a move to a higher level.
- Plan the move. Downsizing, timing, medications, doctors and what to bring to make a new room feel like home.
- Follow up after. The first weeks are an adjustment. We visit, check on how your loved one is settling in and address problems with staff early.
Specialized settings
Not every move is about aging. We also help adults with serious mental illness or developmental disabilities find group homes, supervised living and residential programs. And for people with dementia, choosing the right memory care community is a decision with its own considerations, which we cover in our dementia care management work.
How it works with us
After a free first conversation, we assess your loved one and talk through whether a move makes sense. If it does, we move at the pace your family needs. Some families are planning a year ahead. Others need a decision in days because a parent cannot return home from rehab. We can work on either timeline.
We also pay attention to how your loved one feels about moving. Leaving a home of 40 years is a profound loss, even when it is the right choice. We help families talk about it honestly, include their parent in the decision as much as possible, and make the transition as gentle as it can be.
What families tell us they value
Families tell us they value knowing our advice is not influenced by who pays us. They appreciate having someone who has seen many communities and can tell the difference between a beautiful lobby and good care. And they say the follow-up after move-in matters a great deal, because that is when small issues either get fixed or become big ones.

Assisted Living and Housing Placement: common questions
What is the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?+
Assisted living offers a private apartment or room, meals, activities and help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing and medications, for people who do not need round-the-clock nursing. A nursing home provides 24-hour skilled nursing care for people with significant medical needs or physical dependence. Many people also use nursing homes short term for rehab after a hospital stay. The right choice depends on medical and personal care needs.
Does Medicare pay for assisted living?+
No. Medicare does not cover assisted living, and it covers nursing home care only for a limited period of skilled care or rehab after a qualifying hospital stay. Assisted living is usually paid privately or through long term care insurance. New Jersey Medicaid may help with some long-term care costs for people who qualify. Our guide to NJ Medicaid long term care basics explains more.
Can you help if my parent refuses to move?+
Yes. Resistance is normal, and it usually comes from fear of losing independence, belongings or identity. We listen to what your parent is worried about and address those concerns directly. Sometimes a short-term respite stay lets someone try a community without committing. If your parent has capacity and still says no, we help you make home as safe as possible and plan for what to do if things change.
